In Memory of Carol Matthews: Guided outdoor Labyrinth walk (free)
May 2, 2026
You are invited (free event)!
The Finger Labyrinths at Bethlehem Centre have been touched by countless journeys of reflection, healing, and quiet discovery. Please join us as we gather to honour the life and legacy of Carol Matthews, whose work, writing, and community leadership helped shape the heart of the Centre and its labyrinth traditions.
Carol spent much of her life serving communities as a social worker, educator, and community leader, including her work as Dean of Human Services and Community Education at Malaspina University-College (now Vancouver Island University). She was recognized for her lifelong contributions to community wellbeing, receiving an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Vancouver Island University in 2008, the Order of B.C. in 2012, and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013. Carol was also a published memoirist, sharing stories of memory, place, and labyrinth walking, and served as co-steward of the Godden Finger Labyrinth Museum at Bethlehem Centre.
This gathering will begin with storytelling and remembrance, reflecting on Carol’s contributions to community, writing, and contemplative practice. Guests are then invited to experience the Finger Labyrinth collection, followed by tea, cake, and time to connect with others who have been touched by Carol’s work and presence.
Afterwards, we will move outdoors to walk the labyrinth together in quiet reflection, accompanied by gentle live music.
